Max Muncy arrived at spring training this year at what many described as “his lightest weight ever.” He also showed up with something new — a pair of pink-tinted, high-contrast glasses designed to help track the baseball more clearly.
Thursday afternoon against the Cincinnati Reds, the Los Angeles Dodgers third baseman gave another glimpse of how his spring is unfolding.
In the third inning, Muncy launched an 81-mph curveball some 395 feet into the center-field bleachers, a two-run blast that also brought home Alex Call. The home run was only part of Muncy’s impact on the day. Two outstanding defensive plays at third base later highlighted his afternoon and caught the attention of those watching closely.
It may sound like a cliché, but in Muncy’s case it might actually be true — he’s seeing the ball through rose-colored glasses, quite literally.
The Dodgers went on to defeat Cincinnati 9–5, with several familiar names from last year’s championship run leading the charge.
Andy Pages finished 2-for-3 with a home run, while Teoscar Hernández went 2-for-3 with a double, a home run, and three RBIs. Freddie Freeman added an RBI while going 1-for-2, and Call continued his strong spring with a 2-for-2 performance and a run scored.
Not to be overlooked, Santiago Espinal joined the offensive surge with a double and two RBIs.
Dodgers pitching combined for 10 strikeouts, completing a well-rounded performance on the mound.
With just two weeks remaining before Opening Day, Los Angeles appears to be rounding into form. If early signs are any indication, the club looks determined to compete for the rare achievement of a third consecutive championship.
