As the Los Angeles Dodgers continue to shape their roster ahead of Opening Day, a series of moves over the past week offered a clearer picture of how the club is coming together — with one name standing out above the rest.
The Dodgers selected the contract of Santiago Espinal, a move that could prove significant as the team finalizes its infield picture. With Kiké Hernández still on the IL, Espinal — who has quietly put together a strong spring — fits the mold of the type of player manager Dave Roberts has long valued: a versatile, reliable, “Swiss Army knife” presence capable of contributing across multiple positions.
While others compete for roster spots with power or flash, Espinal’s consistency and ability to play multiple positions may give him the edge as the season approaches.
Alongside that move, the Dodgers continued the process of trimming the roster. Kyle Hurt, Michael Siani, and Paul Gervase were optioned to Triple-A, while several players, including James Tibbs III, were reassigned to minor league camp.
The club also added depth by signing Logan Allen to a minor league deal.
At this stage of spring, these moves are less about headlines and more about refinement — narrowing down the roster to the players who will best complement a championship-caliber core.
But for Espinal, this moment feels different.
With Opening Day fast approaching, he appears to be doing more than just competing — he’s positioning himself to be part of it.
